In addition, it’s important to know how the Undercut is different to its similar styles because you may well find that you’re drawn to one over the other. The problem arises when you change up your barber and you can’t quite express how your old one used to do it for you. After all, you may be visiting the same barber each time and asking for “the usual”. Knowing the name of your haircut may not sound important. But there are many similar styles and it’s important not to confuse them. ![]() Many men now choose to adopt the style without even knowing that’s what it’s called. The resurgence of the Undercut was something quite difficult to predict.

Unless it’s a telephone directory, you’ll notice how the author has (hopefully!) made sensible use of paragraphs to keep text about similar ideas, points, or threads of arguments together. Pick up any book near you and flick through it. The spacing between blocks of text tells us how likely they are to be related to each other. This is also true for paragraph spacing and for more disparate elements of text on a web page. In written material, the law of proximity enables us to make sense of text as a whole. The law of proximity allows us to use whitespace, for example, to build perceived relationships between different elements. Elements that are close to each other are perceived to be related when compared with elements that are separate from each other. The law of proximity describes how the human eye perceives connections between visual elements. For now, let’s stay near proximity, which (literally!) means closeness in space, time, or relationship. There will be a third article to cover the Laws of Figure/Ground, Prägnanz, Closure, and Common Fate. This article is a follow-up to the first Gestalt principles article, in which we introduced and discussed the Law of Similarity. The laws that apply are those of proximity, uniform connectedness, and continuation. ![]() These are influenced by the way in which elements in a design are laid out. ![]() Our brains build connections between disparate design elements based on laws of visual perception. “The eye tends to build a relationship between elements of the same design,” is a crucial saying to keep in mind. Of course, connecting is also important to us – that’s what we want to make happen between our users and our designs! This one is especially useful as it deals with how our eyes and brains draw connections with design images. This research is important, considering the number of very high-profile cases in the last few decades in which young Blacks were killed by people who claimed to believe that the unarmed individuals were armed and/or represented some threat to their personal safety. In this, the second part of our examining Gestalt principles, we’ll look at another Law – the Law of Proximity. Furthermore, White individuals’ decisions to shoot an armed target in a video game is made more quickly when the target is Black (Correll, Park, Judd, & Wittenbrink, 2002 Correll, Urland, & Ito, 2006). For instance, several studies have demonstrated that non-Black participants identify weapons faster and are more likely to identify non-weapons as weapons when the image of the weapon is paired with the image of a Black person (Payne, 2001 Payne, Shimizu, & Jacoby, 2005). Research suggests that implicit racial prejudice and stereotypes affect perception. Built from sensations, but influenced by our own experiences, biases, prejudices, and cultures, perceptions can be very different from person to person. In this module, you have learned that perception is a complex process. Presumably, our ability to interpret sensory information depends on what we label as figure and what we label as ground in any particular case, although this assumption has been called into question (Peterson & Gibson, 1994 Vecera & O’Reilly, 1998).ĭig Deeper: The Depths of Perception: Bias, Prejudice, and Cultural Factors As Figure 1 shows, our perception can vary tremendously, depending on what is perceived as figure and what is perceived as ground. ![]() Figure is the object or person that is the focus of the visual field, while the ground is the background. According to this principle, we tend to segment our visual world into figure and ground. One Gestalt principle is the figure-ground relationship. As a result, Gestalt psychology has been extremely influential in the area of sensation and perception (Rock & Palmer, 1990). Gestalt psychologists translated these predictable ways into principles by which we organize sensory information. In other words, the brain creates a perception that is more than simply the sum of available sensory inputs, and it does so in predictable ways. The word gestalt literally means form or pattern, but its use reflects the idea that the whole is different from the sum of its parts. This belief led to a new movement within the field of psychology known as Gestalt psychology. ![]() Wertheimer, and his assistants Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka, who later became his partners, believed that perception involved more than simply combining sensory stimuli. In the early part of the 20th century, Max Wertheimer published a paper demonstrating that individuals perceived motion in rapidly flickering static images-an insight that came to him as he used a child’s toy tachistoscope. ![]() Drywall attached to the underside of this system is not expected to crack when the floor joist system deflects 1/3″. For example: a floor joist appropriately selected to span 10 feet with an L/360 limit will deflect no more than 120″/360 = 1/3 inches under maximum design loads. They are expressed as a fraction clear span in inches (L) over a given number. Maximum deflection limits are set by building codes. Only live loads are used to calculate design values for stiffness. In other words, how much a joist or rafter bends under the maximum expected load. Stiffness of structural members is limited by maximum allowable deflection. Perhaps the joists were strong enough if they didn’t break! But lack of stiffness leads to costly problems. For example, first-floor ceiling plaster would crack as occupants walked across a second-floor bedroom that was framed with bouncy floor joists. Strength and stiffness are equally important. Beams, studs, joists and rafters act as a structural skeleton and must be strong enough and stiff enough to resist these loads. The house acts as a structural system resisting dead loads (weight of materials), live loads (weights imposed by use and occupancy), like snow loads and wind loads. This article will focus on how simple beams like joists and rafters react to loading. If, when the loads of the house are combined, the house weighs more than the soil can support – the house will sink until it reaches a point at which the soil can support the load. Remember when your science teacher said: every action has an opposite and equal reaction? Well every building load has an equal “reaction load”. ![]() The structural goal of a house is to safely transfer building loads (weights) through the foundation to the supporting soil. A complete analysis of wood’s mechanical properties is complex, but understanding a few basics of lumber strength will allow you to size joists and rafters with the use of span tables. Wood is naturally engineered to serve as a structural material: The stem of a tree is fastened to the earth at its base (foundation), supports the weight of its branches (column) and bends as it is loaded by the wind (cantilever beam). Using span tables to size joists and rafters is a straight-forward process when you understand the structural principles that govern their use. |
